Always the Help

My dream had always been to live in politics, study the laws of this land, be versed in democracy, and dish out justice to poor, immigrant, and other marginalized people en route to my post as Compton’s first Latina mayor. I was an eager sophomore at UCLA majoring in political science wearied by the level of competition. I was a nobody, not a star student, not known for my potential, just another student floating amongst the many over achievers swimming like salmons upstream where our future lay. I knew I had to do more if I wanted to stand out, get a letter of rec to an outstanding law school. I needed the guidance from other outsiders who had trekked this path before. I a young brown girl in a discipline, white as the walls of its department, traditions older than the building it was housed in, saw myself in you, Professor Star, fresh blood, eager faced Associate Professor with the energy and smarts that had broken through the political science glass-ceiling. I took you in and was excited by your voice, assured, strong and booming which filled the intimidatingly big lecture hall as you fielded questions from white, male students who sat back, so cool and comfortably in class knowing they belonged. When I watched you dialogue with that lone white female student whose outlier-ness was masked by the pep in her voice I thought of how I could get time with you after class. I was hungry to pick your brain; feast on your survival skills, so I became your research assistant. Each time I waited outside your office, listening to your womanly boss-voice rattle out your door as you guided your other young mentee, a white girl my, flame quivered, feet got heavy and doubt came over me like a chill. When I walked into your office, you’d ask me “how did the research go? Did you find and summarize the articles?” Never any formalities with me, never asked me how I was or how school was going for me. I coveted the platitudes I overheard you have with your young white mentee. But for me just a hello then my “to do” list. In those moments I felt like my mom, no I wasn’t working on my feet all day for meager pay, I was in the halls of a prestigious university interning for a white scholar who saw me as labor. The dream had always been to be in politics, after two quarters of feeling undervalued I went into your office placed your research on your desk and told you I quit. Your eyes looked at me as if recognizing me for the first time and you stayed quiet not knowing how to field my emotions.

Fucked Up Memory

“It’s just like heaven
bein’ here with you
you’re like an angel
too, good to be true”
-Rosie and the Originals

Too, good to be true?
Huh, must be why I forget
I can have you
whenever I want?
You’re my salt.
You make everything better.
Salt.
Sweat gathered
under my breasts.
Skin red
under my breasts.
Titties slapping
your ass smacking
against my mound.
Methodic.
Soft-mounds slapping
Hard!
FUCKEN burlesque
ain’t got nothing
on these.
Don’t make me twirl
these bitches!
Twirl around my thumb
finds your hole
worm myself inside
your hole, tight brown
fade to pink.
Eye squinting
starring at me.
WINK, WINK!
Each time I blow.
Slow, I dig in slow.
My thumb throbs
pleasure-pressure
pressing down on your spot.

I don’t recall
childhood growing pains
ankles never hurt
back no aches
Titties?
Little avocados
overly ripe
about to burst.
Easily bruised
my EGO
the stares.
Here we go!

Get outta your head!
They say.
Nah, nah,
I get’s into my head.
Close your eyes
lean back
get into my head.
Open wide.
Split you open
my tongue
splashes in your cunt.
You feel me?
That’s called inspire.
I get into my head
sucking hard on
hard swollen clit.
Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Look at you, getting into
my head.
Don’t push me out
let my thoughts
get fermented with you.
Filling up my pores
we penetrate each other.
I get into my head
deep
my thoughts
your juices slipping
between my fingers
opening and reaching
for more of you
grab a fist full of you
have your pulse
in the palm of my hand
have you in the palm of my hand.
You look so good
getting into my head,
got you arched
like a rainbow.
Look at all the colors,
wide blue eyes,
flushed cheeks
cotton candy mouth
screaming “PLEASE!”
Your fingers tangled
with my dark curls.
Dig into my head
smash me into your cunt
make me face my fantasies!
suck you like a slut
Can’t get enough?
Who? You or me?
Same!
Sluts.
Juice you like udders
Juice you
till your utters
echo in your throat.
Getting into my head
Cause that’s how I play
YOU
so good
like soft violins by the shore.
Call me prodigy.
My tongue flapping
like a fish,
I’m hooked.
going down
slow, down
like a shot.
Curl my fingers
hold you inside, tight
my finger prints all over
your walls.
Every ridge is alive
in the moment
get into momentum.
Squeeze my hand inside you
Peace!
Pieces
I want to fuck you to pieces
pump that cunt
fuck you hard
uh con gannas,
ay ese feeling!
Got it hot
the center of my chest
a crescent glows
that there
that’s were my good fucking grows
like your throbs I feel
pressing against my knuckles grow.
Shit gets hot
the puddle under my titties grows.
Mercury you slip through my fingers
quick silver droppings on the floor.
Scattered,
feels so scattered
“Being here with you”

Quinceañera

When does
my Quinceañera begin?
My butchness flower?
Gardenia, pungent, white
pure, innocence
in a bottle aromatic
incense.
Grrrrrr
to be free
Vrrrrrrrroom
Heading that way!
Rites of passage
Rights of passage.
Passing over me
my whole self
when you cross me.
Right to passage, I say!
Evolve, get out the way!
Write my passages
pages and more pages
Mad man!
So, so mad
the pace, Quinceañera.
As in, cada quincena
te traigo tu domingo
No siete!
Quince
Coupletes
una sobre la otra
Oligarchy
but all RICH.
You devour
MY vowels.
You Fester
in my bowels.
Quince
Digo, quisiera
As in “ya quisieras”
Si pudieras lo harías?
“Si lo hago,
chanfles”
Ya no me hago
La Pendeja!
Lotería
Le atine.
butch
Wear me Proud
BUTCH,
Were you proud?
Wore down a little,
not rubbed out
what nut
breaking my head
figuring it out.
OTHERING.
Being OTHERED.
On to OTHERS
and they will do onto you.
Until
you learn
Let go.
Bye bye hair
I didn’t care anymore
Wore my sideburns
Like a waffer
Long, dark,
SWEET!
To me
to myself
in the mirror
I see me.
Have to like what I see
can’t see anything else otherwise.
Quinceañera
Quisiera retener el tiempo
like retaining water
Seria incomodo?
Ya no me incomodo
No me incomodas
Es como vas aprendiendo
Préndete del presente
Quinceañera,
vivir la misma historia
es cosa rara.

Denial

Can I have you on your back
For one more night
…would that be alright?
To let your hair spill all over my sheets
and make a bigger mess of things.

Let's take it back
to two stars colliding in some far away universe
generating the ripples that brought us together.
I'll cloak myself in our reality, como La Virgen in her robe,
a reality OF full moons,
bare hearts
and one broken cherub

I want to get high off the scent
that drifts in the crook of your neck
and fantasize…
that you loved me with the truth till the end
that you loved me as your lover
your partner
your friend…
Let's shed our clothes
glide our hands and tongues
along each other’s contours
close our eyes
sift through the memories
searching for the hole to mend.
We'll feel as one lying side by side
making my full-size feel twin-size with our tightness.
You'll spread your legs for me
one last time,
unfold your lips like you used to
and take me in.
I'll cup your chocha with mine
imagine two hot pussies
Drenched in one another!
I'll feel your body tremor underneath me
you'll pull me deeper
open us wider
get us wetter.
The last chapter
our hard fucking melts our pussies
limp,red
into each other
rawness burning up and down our lips
flowing down our thighs.
We'll lay there like two old volcanoes
gasping ashes of our love into the sky
where specs of it sparkle till the dawn-
the ones that fall back down on us,
will make us look aged.
I'll gather fistfuls of our ashes
cram them into my pockets
then bury them at the base of a tree
water it so that the ashes get absorbed into its roots.
Hopefully,
the tree will be a guayabo
and every summer our love that once existed
will blossom
coloring the palette
of those who eat it.

Tetris

There once was a big hole
a whole lot
of emptiness.
Right there
You see it?
Of course not
Cause there is nothing there!
Not sure if it’s void
of hope though.
But then it wouldn’t be empty
it would be hope full.
There are moments
when I feel full.

You fool!
Me!
See
those moments
that I strive
for
I want more.
Breathing,
POSTURE
foot strike
Strides
Usain Bolt-like
towards my life.

He’s a part
of my Tetris
Art,
my boy
WRITING
my cAts
my kId
my kIts
my boIs
some kicks.
Him
Work
Love
play
Pray to Huehues
that they stay
these moments
Live them
9 to 5
not living for a 9 to 5
don’t want it
don’t don’t
don’t want it .

He’s my student
one more I want to reach
I teach
preach
perched up there in front.
Their future I want to keep in front
of me their
future
shape
well rounded.

There once was a big hole
a whole lot
of emptiness.
Then my fairy-butch mother
then another and another
told me
showed me
there are possibilities
RUNNING rivers down
Me a mountain
Of ideas
Merging
to the… see.

Playing to my strengths
I gotta keep it right
nothing left
must accept the truth.
I make you question
that’s the truth.
Knowledge worker
massaging those thoughts
feeding off the thoughts
VULTURE!
Thoughts
you disseminate
deeper than
your status
they pollinate
my insides
damn you
you Dandelion
shaking me up like that.
Knowledge working
It’s working
this teaching thing for me.
There is more I want to
Orchestrate
Now hear this
Maestro!
Maestra
Mr. Prof.
not Dr.
Don’t doctor me
I don’t doctor myself
Cause I’ve wasted too, many days
feeling wasted
rusting with resentment
bitterness burning my tripas
like Patron

I am a Patron.
Master of my work.
Work for him
nurture him
little plant
GROW.
I’ll feed you with stories
Fertilize with Encouragement
you to create
play with you in the sun.
You create a beauty
I admire
learn from the colors
you magnify.
Smile for me little one
just
Smile.

My Motivation

Stroke
Strokes
across the tight smooth
canvass
vast
strokes
fine strokes
pelitos on her belly fine.
Strokes thick
like thumbs
pressed
pressing windpipe.

Strokes
I don’t get I give to myself.
Strokes I can’t get
I give to myself.

If I were
your Master would
you would do
what I’d say?
I’d say
write me sonnets
paint me views
meant only for a blind woman
help me see
make me savor
cook me
meals with your
sauce
sauciness
satire.

Stroke
me
my ego
there you go
like that
you like that
self confidence in me
ego
let go my Ego
roam free it go
fast it go zoom
sweep you off your
feet.
Please don’t jump
over
my broom.
That’s crossing the line.
Be like me
like me
I don’t like
too, much.
Serial
Seriousness
No more
I’m serious. Not marathon
Mono-gamer anymore
I’m serious.

Each day I am faced by my values
the things I like appear
in so many shapes and sizes.
They are so scattered- wanna connect the dots
hand gliding across
from one dot value
to the other. Valuable
information revealed
I see the picture clear.

See her
My Motivation
Lose myself in her
my labyrinth
has me turning corners
doing tricks
to reach her center
where I feel showered
on fire
in light.

The room spins
my breath
feels like a fur ball
hurts my chest.
You make me forget
simple things
like an exhale.
You remind me
that yes I can.
Have it all
Each day
each time with you
is a déjà vu?
Nah, you’re just my dream
coming true.
My Motivation.

Mi Mujer

Mi mujer

Al mirar en sus ojos
color cajeta
me pierdo en mi imaginación,
veo su corazón latiendo
por mi
fuerte como el palpite del mío
chocando contra mi pecho.

Sus labios son finos y suaves
Como bombones
Al tocarlos con los míos
Se desbaratan como burbujas
es la sensación
que me dan sus besos
burbujeos
en mis labios
mi cuerpo se llene de emoción

Su belleza de mujer domina
todo mis sueños.
Dominante
Dominatrix
su belleza es un don
la veo por las noches
su figura consume
mis pensamientos todo el día.
Belleza omnipresente
por dentro, por fuera
consumo de lo que me muestra.

Me consume el deseo
de tocar su cuerpo
rozar su piel canela
como la de la Malinche
deseo pecaminoso
causa rechazo.
Pero así lo dijo el destino
Y estiro su rizos
suaves y sedosos, los atrapo
entre mis dientes y los estiro
sus rizos fragantes a coco,
me invitan a que entierre
mi cara en ellos.
Me hacen cosquillas en las nariz
como el olor de aquellos churros
con canela que saboreábamos
cada domingo después de misa.

Me acaricia
sus manos
aprietan mis pechos
como preparando masa
para tamales
la acurruco entre mi pecho
susurro en su oído
“Mámame”
siento su boca caliente, pegajosa
resbalosa, resbalando su lengua
sobre mi pezón
se acerca a mi
su boca roza mi boca
“hazme el amor” me pide.
Le doy
un besito seguido por otro
mas largo y profundo
nuestro lenguas bailando
al ritmo, palabras y ternura
de Juan Gabriel.
Pensamientos
Volviéndose en actos
En hechos
Haciendo cosas de enamorados.

Besos y caricias interrumpidas
Por te quieros
le echan leña a nuestro pasión
ya ardiente
quema, arde

So...let it be

I stopped
drinking
smoking
fucking.
Stopped
putting shit IN ME
and shit started
popping INside ME
come up
come out
come out
wherever you are
out of ME.
Sobriety
has me
feeling
some shit
I don’t even like
like anger
sours my stomach
pains my side, my head, shoulder
the root- a damaged heart.

Shit
busted open like a frozen pipe
shit
erupted this New York morning
making me feel all woody
stiff
no longer numbed
making me feel
yesterday too.
Feels like road rage.
Caged in my car.
Caged by my thoughts.
Can’t stop
thinking how far ahead of me you are
guess you took the carpool out of us,
to the next exit
the next rest stop
the next butch
out of this mess.
I’m just a right lane
waiting for the next accident
to happen.
Are you in?
Are you out?
Hurry merge!
You don’t know
and don’t even
understand my signals.
I should learn to read the
Sig alerts.
Foot on the gas
catch that bitch
on Rebound Ave.
thummbing it for the next
town
or I’ll cross her
on that turnstile
called your life.

All this time you had me fooled
WORST
all this time I had ME fooled.
So I think
like brainteasers
keep thinking of that smoking gun.
Shit
busted open!
Your texting at night
what the fuck!
your face
crammed into your phone
giggling, gushing
shit busted open
like you’re all alone
me right there beside you
like your carpool
taking up space.
Should’ve taken that
smoking gun to head
woken my ass up.
BITCH see the light!
Shinning bright in your eyes
like your smile
at the phone’s screen
big like an emoticon
what the fuck did it mean?
But my eyes were shut tight
vexed
busting at the seems.
Only thing I could do is let tears
stream
down
my
face
lost in the night.
Shit
busted
opened.

So perplexed at how
History repeats itself
No matter how much I want
It’s not my story.
Did away with monogamy
Why have to worry about cheating…
DISLOYALTY
So I say
TRUTH
it just
HURTS
when they go away.
They’ve all played it
like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Wanted to avoid history from repeating itself?
So I say.

I can impose my own rules
but can’t seem to win this game
Relationships?
So fucken lame!
Like a duck I dipped
my head under water
holding my breath
blowing bubbles
wishing that things will get better
tomorrow.
Tomorrow, tomorrow
I loved you
tomorrow.
The sun did come up
but my time was up
I upchucked
my love
the loyalty.
Let you be
the ex that you want to be
Ex-lover
ex-friend
ex-fantasy
Excuses, no more!

I stopped.
Drinking
smoking
fucking
I stopped
putting shit in me
and shit came up
out of me
feeling
some shit.
Holding that mirror up to my face
closer than your phone to your face
I gotta face my demons
I’m not all smiles either
shits got me on edge.
With Mistress I pledged
to be clean
not putting shit in me
on her I lean.
I learn…I let go.

It hurts to know
I lived that lie for a while
put my life on cruise control.
Denial.
That’s my style
But I’m getting a make-over
doing it without the hangover
without the mushroom cloud
to enshroud
no more looking like a mountain
all covered in mist, obscured
green with envy
at your texts
too yellow to face you
making me redder with rage
then spirit got so low
I got blue.
Come here sobriety
let me get a taste of you.
Gonna make
MYSELF
Primary
do away with secondary
emotions
not passive aggressive
aggressively passionate
making myself bust
with pride and prejudice
towards a better way
towards getting better
clearing the way
clearing the air
They way that breaks-ups go
it gets frio,
feo,
far
then removed.
but we can’t…
I can’t this time
time to shift gears
cause I wanna keep the boy near
to my heart
even post-his two moms
post won’t equal apart
he won’t be a part
of my history.
Present.

Not making my emotions atomic
Letting them get mountainous
Gotta get cracking
Like a single-tail
Blurting out my demons
So!
Call me tattle-tale
I don’t care
when all my stuff is said and done
Mistress’s paintings have just begun
Our work, our collabos,
@= C+A
are the smoking gun.
We’ve committed
a crime against
unproductiveness
geniuses at work
working hard
working shit out
making our spirits
strong as steel
to steal your breath away
dealing with our storms
making our internal chaos
come to a stand still.

I want forgiveness
I can’t continue
to hope for
control of history
can’t hope that you
would have.
Can’t change the times
when I didn’t
when I could’ve.
I can…
So you
changed the scenery?
Shit I prefer the 101 any day over
The 5 going up north…
No more making the other
Feel tail gated
No- to riding each other’s ass
gotta get my
eyes off the rear
view.

I have to not lose sight of things
How blessed I am
to be here again and again
consistently creating
ascertains that
I’ve come with certainty
It’s beautiful
what I see
all the shit that’s
come up
come out
comes out of
me

Soldadera de Amor

It is what it is.
A disgrace
a mustache
a uni-brow
on a pretty face.
No matter how much
you consume her
you all can’t be Frida
La sufrida, vivio
su vida.
Subidas y bajadas
Haci es la vida.

Now that there
is someone….(ugh!)
some pain that you
no one
wants to feel
some pain that kills
some pain that makes you
wanna kill
yourself
quick like a leap
or slow like depression
of your soul
put yourself down
down
in a little black box
Aha! Hence my intrigue.
Not my destiny but my mind.
So not free to
so not free
Not expunged of those memories
I say I can’t remember but
como los cargo encima
como el peso del matrimonio
… some pain that makes you wanna kill.
But she didn’t
she didn’t kill herself!
She painted her imperfections
with perfection.
She paints her imperfections
with inflections
with inflections
with inflec-tionnnnnnnnn-ssssssss
Painting deliciousness
on tongues.

She paints her imperfections for me
letting me in to what got into her.
Her spinal column is pillar strong
I see it in her stance.
Her hugs
soft and secure like a tree
I stand with her
I kneel
at her side
near her spats.
Where she likes to see me.
She likes the view
so much so she built herself a tree house
to get a closer look.
Look!
A little piece of heaven.
heaven
haven
of my trust
haven of my lust
haven of my fears and
that big ol’ mean bitch I carried inside me
refusing to let me live
so I thrust that bitch, thrust her out
…almost all out
and into her
Mistress
/
Trust
/
Mistress
/
keeper of…
dominator of…
protector of…

War begets war?
Violence begets violence?
Not to the Soldaderas de amor
aquellas mujeres con el espiritu arañado
que han logrado despues de todo
todo todo aquel rollo…a amar a la vida
“Viva la Vida!”
vivio la vida hasta la muerte
even with her
spinal column\broken
collar bone\broken
ribs, pelvis\broken
her leg 11 times\breaks.
She breaks me down
puts me back together
Coyolxauhqui
moon goddess
surrounded by brothers
the stars
shattering the darkness of the sky
rays of life.

Reik my soul
raking my back
With her nails
/
flogger
\
single tail
…
a trail
3 tracks
mi cuero arañado
…bear claws
she gets beastly on me.
SOY beastia
Por su cuero
Staining my back red
inflaming my back
amor que arde.
Her ass on my head
muffling my thoughts
I feel her legs naked
or in cuero
around my neck.
Dayum!
She gives the best hugs.

War begets war violence begets violence
Search for perfection begets…
Aha! That’s a tricky question
cause I don’t show my imperfections
see
even after a drunken night,
hung-over depressed
waking up in last-night’s outfit
I feign togetherness.

I’ve never been a cheater
but man am I cheating life!
I should be treating life
like a book, a story I want to read
It’s not in our destiny
It’s in our mind.
Please don’t mind
me as I unwind
spiral down
this vortex
called life
it is what it is…

Too Queeny for Their Own Dam Good (World AIDS Day Speech at CSUDH. I met Lou Gossett Jr.)

My coming out experience was drenched in effeminate male energy. My click was a bola of loud and proud young jotos too queeny for their own dam good. They faced taunting from the jocks, cowardly threats left at night stuck to their dorm room door and the snickers from girly-girls as they, these young, brave, smart queeny boys, made their way across campus skipping hand in hand. These hombres, with their staunch rebelliousness against anything boring, intolerant and hetero-normative taught me about standing up for my right to be who I am. I learned to be proud, outspoken and how to be comfortable in my butch skin. Yes, they even helped me feel desirable- I do make a cute boi after all.

“I like your sideburns,” he said then giggled.
“Thanks! Why do you laugh?” I asked
“Cause I don’t think I’ve ever told a girl that before,” he replied and giggled some more this time he covered his mouth with his palm, very ladylike.

We both laughed and continued to walk across campus, him leaning his tall lanky body on me the way a prom queen would lean on her king’s shoulder; we walked on to class ignoring the stares. I laughed cause I’ve never had anyone comment on my sideburns, long and always trimmed and I laughed at how I was sure not many other women had ever been complimented on their facial hair. My boys were young Latino men who didn’t take shit from their daddies and definitely not from any asshole walking the street feeling entitled to shout any homophobic comment that came to mind. They were fiery fieras burning with gayness and pride- explosively showing all the disappointed mommies and daddies of the world that despite being jotos they were men in their own right. No one was about to take their manhood and humanness away from them. Together we were a tight bunch ready to wittingly cut down any homophobe that crossed our undergraduate paths. We were young, educated jotos/dykes after all; the world had already looked us in the face and spit in our eye as far as we were concerned. What did we have to lose? We didn’t come all the way from our barrios to the privileged world of Westwood to fail. We were not going to return back to our hoods with our heads hanging low, shit save that for the fun stuff -if you know what I mean (Wink).

I make us sound aggressive huh? That’s not what we were we were more like uncompromising when it came to who we were, UNWILLING to shed part of our identity to make others be it friends, family or society more comfortable. Blood is thicker than water but not heavier than hate and intolerance. We were a tight bunch, we were each other’s friends when all the other Latino organizations on campus decided that the issues they actively addressed such as; immigration, family, higher education, women’s rights, etc had nothing to do with who we were cause we were gay. We were each other’s family when our families chose not to welcome us home and closed the doors to our haven because we were gay. We were each other’s support system when the news flashed on about hate crimes and violence committed against other gays in LA, California the nation cause we too were gay. You have to understand my jotos had been fighting for their right to just be for more than half of their lifetime; for some it began the minute someone noticed that something was “funny” about them and used that “funny” factor to continually oppress them. And since then they had to be fighting, verbally, physically and spiritually scratching their way to the top, their right to be. So they had years of experience with fronting toughness, invulnerability while I was just beginning to see and experience it first hand. But that’s how in “your face” we had to be so as not to be silenced and rendered invisible in the utopia, micro-microcosm of society we inhabited.

The truth is that we were harmless, a nonviolent group of Queer activists enjoying the fact that we destabilized many with our mere presence. We were definitely stigmatized. For example:

“Boo!” I ran up to Marcos, this guy I met at the summer program, Marcos was cool ,very smart and I liked talking to him. He had a cold look on his face. “Did I scare you, little ole me? Nothing still from him. “I’m the same one that used to meet up with you in between classes, chit chat about this and that.
“Yeah, I know, how was your summer?” he said followed by nervous laughter.
“My summer was good, things changed, I’m sure you heard by now…”
I had changed, I had morphed into my self. That was the last time I talked to Marco- he seemed to avoid me. I didn’t understand why folks didn’t like me anymore, some said they missed the old me. But since I now paraded around campus: a butch lesbian with sharp sideburns surrounded by a bunch of jotos, loud, flamboyant and affectionate with one another I seemed to have inadvertently repelled some folks. People chose to reject us rather than be labeled “gay by association”. We dared to show we loved each other and ourselves. Que cosa mas disgusting. These jotos, maricones, puñales, putos were my brothers unidos por la puteria that ran through our veins. And as I learned about Chicana/o consciousness in class, understood how our families were the pinnacle of our existence as a community and as individuals; we conceal our bastardized hearts, the sting! With our loud, smiling rainbow colored pride. We turned that rejection from our families on its head by becoming family to each other.

Many of the feminists/activists I read as an undergraduate talked about their relationship with gay men and painted a picture of sorrow, relationships built around the need for survival, need for support to fight the disease known as AIDS that was ruthlessly taking away all the jotos. I got a picture of an era full of men weak from not enough T-cells and too many opportunistic infections. I pictured an era where not enough resources or sympathy towards the black and brown jotos to far off the radar of any white gay activist to survive. Seem familiar? Seems familiar, things change and things stay the same. Now I find myself, a student of life, and employee of an HIV/AIDS organization and as a Professor at CSUDH for a year now continue to fight the fight for the survival of our communities. And we can all do it in our own way. Each semester I have made it a point to talk to my Sociology students in ‘Women in Society, because:
• Women of color (especially African American women) are the hardest hit.
• Younger women are more likely than older women to get HIV.
• AIDS is a common killer, second only to cancer and heart disease for women.
For those of you not familiar with HIV and AIDS, or GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) as it was once called because it was originally thought to affect mostly gay men. But women have always been affected too. And even though more men than women have HIV, women are catching up. In fact, if new HIV infections continue at their current rate worldwide, women with HIV may soon outnumber men with HIV. That is why it’s important to talk about it with our friends, families and communities. That is why it is important for us to talk about it here today at CSUDH where 65% of the undergraduate and 75% of the graduate population is composed of women. We have to talk about it because it doesn’t make sense not to.

For many of the feminists/activists, theirs was any era where lesbians nurtured their dying brothers, an era where everyone- lesbian or gay attended more funeral services that one should endure. I then looked at my relationships with my gay male friends, how we were all so young, full of life-not attending funerals at ridiculous rates. I’m sure that our foremothers and fathers knew it would get better, they had to believe or else things would fade as fast as their brothers were. I felt lucky, for myself to have healthy friends, lucky to have ancestors who had given us the chance, through their activism, their loss- to have greater opportunities and more attention to the education and prevention needs of communities of color. I felt lucky just to have them with me. I’m one of the lucky ones, rejection is the worst I’ve experienced. For many of us listening to these words makes things feel pretty bruised inside and out, feelings get so silenced and the pain in our hearts gets louder- we may only see one way out. But there are other ways to turn things around. Our survival is crucial for the change. It can start with one thought, one word, a page a book on things getting better, that you read then submit for the next issue of it or start another one, build on to take on the next degree of the struggle, one so beautiful, needs to be kept alive. Like a chain letter only this doesn’t end with a warning or cursedly ending…

My Champ

Ama..
Hearing your steps
cross our shoe-box apartment
slow moving
dragging
like a champ
knocked to the canvas
as the city enjoyed its second dream
made my little heart a little sad.
You’d come home
your body beat-up
by fatigue from back-to-back
eight-hour rounds
at the factories
piecing together
anything your nimble hands
qualified you to.
No belt, no fame, no glory
barely a living
for your accomplishments
for ever unnoticed
blended with the exploitations
of others.
Just a tired body
always tired body
you plopped onto
the sagging mattress.
I’d lay there feigning sleep
didn’t want you to notice me
didn’t want you to exert more energy
to give me a tight squeeze.
I’d watch through squinted eyes
you pulled out your bag of healing
from under our bed
medicines from across the border
brought back by neighbors,
relatives who could cross the border.
I’d hear the swishing of bottles
You’d drench your arms and legs
the sting of the green liquid-
Rue infused rubbing alcohol
burned the inside of my nose.
You’d slap your hands together
smashing and melting the slab,
yellow ointments
thick like lard
applied hands
glide across your joints.
No relief
even for relief
your hands work hard.
You winced from the aches
thin skin around your eyes
folded like fans.
I wanted to massage your feet
hot with plump plum veins
wanted to drape myself over
your wilted shoulders.
Being poor wasn’t so bad
it meant I could sleep
next to your warm body
coiled like a snail’s shell.
No 10 count for you
cansancio always had the upper hand
you were out for the night.
I could smell you smelling
of botanica
felt your hands twitch
with leftover energy.
No relief
even for relief
your hands work hard.
Felt your heavy breathing
I’d stop my breathing
waited
exhaled
with yours.
No hugs at night
no tucking in
the way you used to
but my heart
beat with yours
my champ
my Mami.

Compton

I read somewhere…oh yeah on myspace that you know it’s true love when “it’s complicated”. Compton IS a complicated city.  I’m sure you’ve heard of it?

Various stories, news reports flashed on television, interwoven with the lyrics of gansta rappers like EZ-E, Dr. Dre and The Game. Surely you’ve bobbed your head to their beats? The tales these rappers and news reports tell are not make-believe stories but they make folks  believe what’s only half true and the other half  folks fabricate on their own  cause folks just don’t know no betta'.

COMPTON!

Did your mind conjure up something all tingly and California-sun warm? There are tales that people tell tales I have to hear whether I’m checking in at a small inn in Santa Fe, New Mexico or taking a tour through the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu, Hawaii. I hear the tales of my city.   “Is it as bad as they say,” asks the Miami transplant now residing in a slower paced Santa Fe and working in Guest Services at the small inn.  He hands me the key to my room I give him a blank stare.  “Compton?”  He says as he points at the address on my driver’s license when I don’t answer his question. I didn’t know what to say.  I was dumbstruck and got doubly-dumbstruck cause I can’t believe this question still dumbstruck me.  I hear it all the time.

Cut.

Flash forward a few months after New Mexico.

Scene: the beautiful island of Ohau:

“Hello, my name is Lemeki and I’m from Compton,” the Fijian tour guide cracks a joke before he started his lecture on Polynesian culture to the attentive all-tourist-filled audience.

Compton.  It’s the place where drive-bys occur, where every one of my middle school years is marked with memories of racial riots among Black and Latino Compton High youth trying to annihilate each other. Black on brown violence, no title on the line, no million dollar award- shit not even the pride of bragging rights.  Just plain ignorance-laden poverty-driven violence. I never understood why they did it nor how my sisters, all three of them, managed to study in those conditions. I knew I didn’t want to go through it and I fled, found a different rout towards my high school dimploma.  On a big bumble bee of a bus that chauffeured my ass to C.A.M.S (the California Academy of Mathematics and Science).

Cut.
Flash back to my 9th grade year. English class, students are seated in a circle cause it’s group work time.  Not sure what the assignment was cause we we’re talking and not necessarily working.   “So do you have to wear a bullet proof vest?” asked the curly-top Jewish boy in my group. My homie, Mike who also got picked up  in Compton, turned to look at me and busted out laughing. Mike saw the “beat down coming on” expression on my face, turned to Jewish boy and proceeded to bust out laughing in his face.

“What do you mean?” I asked in my most mean-mugging face.

“Well, you know, you live in Compton and, you know, there’s a lot of gang ware fare there.”

“Oh, I said. Yeah I hear you but my vest is in the cleaners today and my glock is in the shop.” I’ll spare you the details of how the rest of the conversation went down, just know that no, he didn’t get a beat down just an angry lecture. Compton = gangs?  I’ll admit to that but there’s so much more.  There is also poverty and underserved communities. As I mentioned before I attended high school at C.A.M.S, which by the way, Los Angeles Magazine ranked as the 4th best high school in Los Angeles this year. I would say 95% of the students who attended got bused in from their respective districts and all the students were at the top of their class in their respective middle school.  I rode on the Compton and South L.A. bus. Just to tell you, in order to remain a student at C.A.M.S you had to maintain a certain GPA which I don’t recall at the moment nor could I find said information on their website. If you didn’t maintain that GPA then you were placed on academic probation.  My first semester, which also happened to be the first semester ever at C.A.M.S, was the school's first semester and practically everyone from the Compton/ South LA bus was placed on academic probation and required to take a tutoring class, which we all affectionately called the “dummy class”. I think the administration was surprised but obviously ready and willing to address the problem. This was my first experience seeing the inequality in the quality of education I received in Compton and what other students in other districts like Palos Verdes, Long Beach, Torrance etc. had received. I was one of the lucky ones though because I had been tracked as a gifted and talented student, which meant I got the opportunity to learn from the best teachers at my Compton schools.

Compton.  The Williams sisters first learned their game here, at the imperial tennis courts to be exact.  But not even their fame and winnings would spare them from later learning that their sister, Yutende Price, got shot down in a drive by.  Compton. It’s quite a distance from here to Beijing, China the destination of the 2008 Olympics where Tayshaun Prince and Lisa Leslie got their necks looped with gold medals for being the best basketball team in the world. For Lisa this would be her fourth, Mr. Prince is also a member of the 2004-05 NBA championship team the Detroit Pistons.

Compton home to 100,000 inhabitants 51% of those are Latinos, no longer a chocolate city. But the change in racial composition is not the only change that Compton has undergone. After receiving a State Enterprise Zone program, Compton has experienced a lot of business and industrial expansion (we got our own Best Buy and a Magic Johnson 24hr Fitness, ya’ll!) new houses have been built AND a new senior center is in the works.  My city even has it’s own district comprised of 24 elementary schools, eight middle schools, three high schools, and one adult school, which also serves as an alternative school.  The district maintains five alternative learning schools unfortunately our schools have not yet reaped the benefits of the State Enterprise Zone program at least not from what I’ve seen and read in the papers. The sad thing, I would say downright heartbreaking thing, is that across the nation, the world, things are so financially hurting that a few shops at Compton’s new shopping plaza have already closed down. We’ll see if Best Buy is a best bet in this city at this time.

As far as I can remember the educational system in Compton has always left one wanting more. Sadly enough in 1993, my junior year of high school, Compton Unified got taken over by the California Department of Education due to gross, funky ass mismanagement of the dirty presidents.  In 2004 Compton Community College lost it’s accreditation again for mismanagement and fraud.  FUCK people, when can we stop fucking ourselves over?

I want to say that I am leaving but I’m already gone.  Writing from my new place, new home full of pine smell and homie feel. But still want to share what I felt as I arrived to here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part of me is afraid to leave mostly because I have to change my route to achieving my dream, changes and very unexpected surprises and leaps in personality.  Just another way of saying that I feel like I’ve grown.  It’s not so much just the moving part, the literal move from one space to the other, I feel that I’m trying to be present and aware of her…my love.  Give a relationship 5 years, that’s sort of like the rule of thumb, huh? I didn’t really believe it until that day when I heard it twice in one day.  It was one of many things that I experienced in 1 day- it was a deja vou day, I suppose.

I heard that twice in one day and once from my own mouth.  So I can’t stay in one place, marry my dreams to a site.  They come with me- they are my part; a part of me.  I say this as I’ve packed up most of my shit in preparation to bounce from the CPT. I want to work with the youth here, in this city, I want to have the talented ones, the expressive ones, the accomplished to the 10th degree, the motivated one.  Yes it sounds elitist but the truth is that they can all be…

Accomplished, expressive, talented, motivated

I just want to say that it’s about over coming challenges.  Hopefully the students

Will see it too

It must be true.  I have a riddle for you…

“Cual de los dos amantes sufre mas pena? El que se va o el que se queda

Answer: El que se queda, se queda llorando

Y el que se va, se va suspirando.”

BLM Owes Me Nothing!
